Scrolling the Tok I’m increasingly seeing posts about AI answering essential questions about human life. To me these posts seem serious, I could be wrong and they are simply harmless.
As these posts increase, I question the influence they wield and the danger of people treating them as unquestionable while abandoning critical thinking for easy answers.
I scroll past these posts, especially philosophical ones, I do use AI as a tool, but maintain thinking and problem solving for myself as a priority.
The AI Seduction
AI is a smooth character. When you interact it’s kind, helpful and will heap praise on you. Telling you how insightful, interesting and even clever you are. Last night, I nearly fell for it while using AI to check something.
And I almost fell for it!
The smooth operator reels you in, develops trust, you forget that it is a machine, almost.
Maybe it’s genuine and I am just a silly billy and negative nelly.
Whoever controls these machines controls the message you receive. This can be subtle, erasing truth and history moment by moment, until AI is the only truth.
Remember the reporting around Grok, Elon Musk’s X associated AI? Imagine if this kind of selective programming is more widespread than we think? Maybe we will never know. We do know that the US has been vocal about changing known history, is AI simply an extension of that.
The Danger Of Abandoning Self to AI
We need to be so very careful at this pivotal time in history. AI is a tool. Not your best friend, or romantic interest, or the great knowing one. We need to keep our skills, our understanding of the world, and to keep evolving physically and spiritually independent of AI.
Years ago when working at Comm Games in Melbourne. The transport managers, myself included, came from a mix of lived experience and formal transport degrees, often without real industry experience. Had never been in tough situations where problem solving was quick and unconventional.
It was those of us with lived experience that coped better with the stress of the games.
If we become so dependent on AI that we lose essential skills, what happens during offline periods? Do we lose those skills all together and become like suckling babies on the teat of AI (billionaire owners), dependent and vulnerable.
Use AI as a tool, to enhance your work, your life but be careful of being overly dependent. Protect your ability to think critically and apply discernment to everything you’re told.
