Growth Is Born From Risk

In Thoughts, Wonder by JayLeave a Comment

Risk taking is something that has always come natural to me. Doesn’t make me special, some even think it’s because I am stupid or lack emotional intelligence. However, the way my brain works I can calculate risk in any situation quickly. I have a naturally curious nature. These two things are often the driver behind the risks that I take.

Curiosity Helps Me Grow & Learn

Curiosity comes first, fear arrives in the middle of what I am doing, this is the system I have perfected. I am not oblivious to how scary things are, I really am not I just refuse to let it stop me. So what I do, is park the fear and focus on the interesting, exciting part that is sparking my curiosity and only allowing myself to feel it once its too late to back out.

When I travelled to the USA as an exchange student, the fear hit hard on the final leg of the journey. As I flew over to massage at the Commonwealth Games, I freaked out and worried I wouldn’t be good enough. When I left Australia in 2010, I had already packed up or given everything away, and I stood at the airport ready to fly into the unknown.

This is the pattern, and it works for me.

There are things I wont do, and no matter of convincing will change my mind. I will always have a valid reason, and things that are physically dangerous have never been my jam. I have watched too many funniest home videos to see those risks as interesting. Besides, I have already calculated the risk, understood what can go wrong and decided there are much more interesting things I would prefer to do.

Diving Out Of Your Comfort Zone Is a Beautiful Thing

I get it, it’s so tempting to stay where things are familiar, predictable, and kinda easy. Don’t you get bored. Look, I know everybody will never be like me, I am an unusual individual and out there solutions are a bit of a specialty of mine. I just couldn’t do what you do.

When I return to workplaces years later, I see the same people in the same seats, doing the same tasks and repeating the same complaints I once listened to.

If you’re happy in your comfort zone and want nothing more than peace, I genuinely admire that. Sometimes I wish my mind worked that way, but I can’t help myself. I chase laughs, do silly things, and try to spark smiles from strangers.

We Can All Be Different

I love being able to evolve, transmute the crap, shitty, and sometimes fantabulous events/happenings into something more. Not allowing things to destroy my sense of self and being able to turn them into something amazing for myself is awesome.

Mind you, I get that it would sometimes be preferable that the challenges would be different, the outcomes less debilitating, but I accept that life happens for me and not to me, I believe in the power of the universe.

Take a Step Out

When you can, take a risk, poke a toe out of your comfort zone. Try a new spice, put your phone down and have a conversation, walk instead of drive. Start small, you can do it, there is an amazing beautiful world out there waiting for you.

Peace Out
